the next country on k’s daycare schedule is China. the teacher asked for my help. years ago i taught elementary grade kids to make dumplings and i thought of simpler steps for k’s class of toddlers to make them but my greatest challenge was k’s wheat allergy. i tried for several weeks to make gluten free dumping wrappers to no avail. they kept falling apart – too fragile for toddler hands.

the first few “birthdays” parties we had for k – her 1 month and her 1 year – were in some ways more parties for us than for her. it was mostly m & my friends and the food was mostly adult food. since she was so young, it may not have made much of a difference to her.

i actually first found this brand chips in my local supermarket for a friend of mine – she loves her sriracha hot sauce and this brand had these sriracha flavored chips so i bought them for her and her daughter for fun. i didn’t think twice about giving it to k since she wasn’t going to be ready for spicy foods anytime soon (since her adverse reaction to garlic). i saw this online and thought they were too cute to resist! since k is allergic to strawberries per the original recipe, i used raspberries instead. also the original recipe had a marshmallow on top but to keep it completely fruit, i added another piece of banana on top. with the remaining fruit, i made a simple fruit salad with all the fruits k can eat so we all enjoyed a cute and refreshing dessert.
even though k has not read / heard the book yet, she loved how the grinch kebabs looked and wanted more!

k’s daycare had been playing “kitchen” for a few weeks. then they informed me that they are starting a cooking class in their weekly schedule. i thought: how fun! but the new class comes the concern about k’s food allergies. not only do we have to make sure k doesn’t eat the food she knows she’s allergic to, we also have to be more careful about what she hasn’t tried yet because there are plenty of things she hasn’t eaten yet! in order to completely rule out cow milk as a cause of k’s eczema, the allergist suggested we give k a vegetable based formula instead of a milk/soy based formula for a few weeks. if k’s skin improves then milk may be a cause. if doesn’t improve at all, then it is not a cause for her eczema.
