dehydration: oral electrolyte solution

we started k at daycare so she could be around other kids to be social as well as to learn from them. of course with exposure to other people, especially kids, comes germs. a friend’s daughter almost a year older than k started in daycare when she was 3 months. a friend said during her daughter’s first year at daycare, she was sick often – with diarrhea, ear infections, etc. – but during her second year, it got better.

so i wasn’t very surprised when k had her first bout of diarrhea after she started daycare. k’s pediatrician prescribed holding off on introducing solids for a few days until her diarrhea goes away. to supplement her diet while replenishing her loss of liquid (via diarrhea), the pediatrician prescribed an oral electrolyte solution (most commonly known as Pedialyte), 4 ounces twice a day.

we picked up Pedialyte Unflavored at our local pharmacy. a 1 liter bottle, once open, only lasts 48 hours and with k’s dosage (for infants) we had to waste some of it. but after 4 days, her poopy was back to normal so that was more important. whew!
